Mmmm. Pie.

I love pie. I can remember when I was small, and my mum used to bake pies all the time. My dad had a special triangular shaped piece of Tupperware just so that he could take a slice of pie to work.

I tend to make crisps these days because they're so much easier than making pastry (even though I can do that passibly well). If you're posting that pie recipe you gave me once, where you fill the pie from a hole in the top, I can say it is, without a doubt, a Most Excellent Pie.




Mmmm, fresh apples. We had a Coxs Orange Pippin tree in the back garden when I was growing up. You don't see them very often now, because they don't keep well in coolstores. In New Zealand you can usually buy them for a couple of weeks in autumn, but I've never seen them in Sydney. My mouth is watering!


Hood River is home to many orchards here in Oregon. The apples from there are heavenly. When I needed a box, I would get one of those apple boxes and open it. Oh the smell was so good!

One of my favorite parts about autumn--in addition to being able to wear my handknit again--is that it's apple season. I refuse to eat them out of season because the mealy, mushy texture is just, oh, so wrong for an apple. But in autumn?? I can't get enough of them. That crisp, crunchy texture, the sweet-tart juice on the tongue, and yes, that fabulous smell. Macouns have been my favorites for years, and the newer Honeycrisps are deliciously crunchy . . . And as to pie. Well, pie crust and I have never gotten along, but there's a farmstand not too far away that sells home-style pies, either already baked or frozen for you to bake at home. Theirs is my current favorite apple pie. I get to fill the house with that aroma and yet don't have to fight with the rolling pin. Ah, heaven!

A moderate serving of apple pie won't kill you. I heard a Buddhist monk say one time that all things in moderation are good.


We make a modest apple pie from time to time out here. It's not haute, but it's what everyone wants for the holidays. If we neglect to make it, we never hear the end of it. We like to wait for Winesaps to do it, but any good baking apple harvested fresh in the Fall brings a smile to my brothers face:) As for crust, we do a simple oil crust but compensate by putting dabs of butter on the apple filling before baking. You make me want to get up and bake! Thank you for the lovely blog.

Well Ted..... again you talk about something dear to my heart. Pies.

I am a pie baker, in the late 80's I even had a job making pies for differnt restrants around T.O.
I just got back from summer hoildays at the lake (mother-in-law moved to the family cottage in Muskoka)
And one of my activites was cooking and baking. Baking pies of course. I let the children (mine and neices and nefews) choose what kind of pie they want Aunt denny to make.My mother-in-law is a potter so I bake home-made pies in hand thrown pottery pie plates.
Lemon merange(sp?) and peach-wild blueberry with a crunchy crumble topping. One day I will come to where you live (hi my Emma) and make you some yummy pies. Because for me pie making is as easy as............pie!
I make a dam fine lemon square as well (or so I've been told).
You will be proud of me too. I have really been doing well in my "summer of lace knitting".


I'm sitting here drinking my tea, getting hungry for breakfast as I read your blog. My mouth is literally watering. I LOVE apple pie, but I agree, it has to be good apple pie. Nothing store bought and nasty. I can't wait for the recipes. Don't keep us waiting too long.


After reading KnitSisters today, I was all set to have (another) lazy day, but you and your pie stories have made me think about visiting the fruit-stand to get fresh apples and then baking a pie. I'm not very good with pie-dough, but hubby is. My grand-mother used to make and bake five pies at a time (she cooked with a wood cook-stove). She had nine children...each of the four boys would get their own pie, and the fifth pie was divided between the five girls, grandpa and grandma. (All of the boys were working at the local saw mill at the time, but still....)


Thank you for the lovely read about your childhood memories...could almost (but not quite) smell them. Looking forward to the recipes, I don't think it odd at all for you to be posting about apples, pies and baking, I've been planning on posting a recipe for date squares that I've changed to make them more friendly to the health conscious. The love of knitting can take you to lots of places in the mind...apples and memories.


Lovely memories! Funny you should talk about apple pies. I am in the process of baking one now for an Apple-themed gathering tomorrow evening! It is indeed that time of year.

Well now, if only I'd known you liked pie I would have greeted you with one. I make a pretty darn nice crust, if I do say so myself. I'll be interested to see your recipes.


Mmmm. Apple pie. Strange you should mention it; the other day while I was working (procrastinating), my mouth suddenly remembered the taste of apple pie from my Canadian childhood. I don't know who made them or where I ate them, but the taste lives on in my memory. I can't match it, especially in the UK: there are many fabulous apples here, but none make the apple pie of my dreams. I'll happily try yours, though!

The variety of apples available to us in Sydney is limited to what will keep in the supermarket. Most of the older varieties have disappeared from the shelves, flavour comes a poor second behind how long they will keep. I have fond memories of Cox's Orange Pippin apples from the time I spent in England.


The best pumpkin pie I've ever eaten was made using the recipe on page 303 of "The Silver Palate Cookbook" by Julee Rosso and Sheila Lukins. Workman Publishing ISBN 0-89480-204-6


My grandmother, a marvelous baker of pies and most anything else, would offer a slice saying, "it's just a little fruit sandwich." Warm apple pie with a slice of cheddar cheese makes a wonderful breakfast treat, too.

My mum used to make a pie crust with 7-up. It was the flakiest lightest thing ever. Alas and Alack she has lost the recipe and doesn't even recall making such a crust. I however clearly recall being entranced by the usage of 7-up oh so many years ago.
